The question and the method, written before the results.

Write each line of inquiry down once: the question, the claims, and what would change your mind, before the results. In a Git repository, each frame and investigation keeps its history, so the method outlives the student who knew it.

Free for macOS, Windows, and Linux. No account, no subscription.

The Question frame of a research programme: the question in one sentence, why it matters, what would count as an answer (decided before the data), and what the programme is not asking.
The Question frame: what the programme asks, and what would count as an answer, written before the data.

Sound familiar?

The method lives in someone’s head.

And that someone defends in May.

  1. An oral tradition

The protocol is whatever the last postdoc did. It’s written down nowhere, and you learn it by standing next to them.

  2. Which version did we run?

Two copies of the method, the same file name, different thresholds, and nobody sure which one the first sample used.

  3. Reasons, reconstructed

Seven participants excluded, a recall time moved, a measure swapped. By the time the paper is written, the reasons are a guess.

How it fits

One file per line of inquiry, judged against four frames.

Install the research framework and the programme gets four frames that every investigation is judged against, and one file per investigation, grouped by strand. An investigation says what’s asked and what would settle it. It isn’t a lab notebook, a protocol, or a task list.

Frames
Question, Prior Work, Method, and Ethics: what you ask, what is known, the standard of evidence decided in advance, and who is affected.
Investigations
One per line of inquiry, by strand: Intent, Open Questions, Claims & Evidence, What Would Change Our Mind, Out of Scope, and Method. A note variant keeps early ones short.
Status
Draft, Open, Running, Answered, Inconclusive, or Abandoned. A question that came back empty stays, because the attempt is part of what the lab knows.
Roles
Researcher, Reviewer, and Sponsor. An AI agent answers a reviewer with the weakest claim first, and a sponsor in plain language.
The investigations of a research programme as a table, grouped by strand (recordings, models, replication), each with its question as a summary and its status: Running, Open, Answered, Inconclusive, Abandoned, or Draft.

What you will use most

The pieces that keep a method honest.

  • Git

    The version you actually ran

In a Git repository, every frame and investigation shows who changed it, when, and a diff against today. The method a sample used is a commit, not a guess.

  • Blueprints

    A check before the paper

The check lists every investigation missing a section its template asks for, such as the falsifier, or a property such as its strand. It runs on a laptop and in CI.

  • Backlog

    The work beside the question

Scoring nights, freezing a notebook, uploading tables: each task points at the investigation it serves, so the investigation never fills up with to-dos.

  • Assets

    Approvals and figures, linked

Consent forms, ethics approvals, and figures linked to the investigations they belong to. Raw data stays where it lives now.

  • AI Agent

An agent with the investigation open

Claude Code or Codex beside the page, with the open investigation as context. A new student can ask how the lab scores a night and point it at the Method frame.

History

Which version of the method did we use?

In a Git repository, every frame shows who changed the standard of evidence, on which day, and the exact words, with a diff beside the page. Nobody has to keep method_final2.md.

For the computational side

The same files from a terminal

The desktop app is optional. The CLI reads the same project, so the check runs in CI beside your analysis code.

Install the research framework.

Frames for question, prior work, method, and ethics, and investigations grouped by strand. It has no collection for protocols: add one under Framework settings with the sections your protocols share, and each is checked like any other page.

Write the method down before the next student starts.

Download Eidos MD, install the research framework, and write your programme’s question and standard of evidence. It’s free, and the files stay in your lab’s repository.

Free for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Your files stay plain text in a folder you own.
